Dr. Wei Xie began his research on non-fluorinated ion-exchange membranes during his doctoral studies. After earning his Ph.D., he joined United Technologies Corporation (UTC)—the largest fuel cell/flow battery company in the United States—as the Flow Battery Project Lead. In this role, he spearheaded the development of novel proton-exchange membranes and high-power-density vanadium flow batteries, while also co-leading three U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) technology development projects. Among these, the high-power-density vanadium flow battery project was honored with the 2013 R&D 100 Award, recognizing it as one of the year’s top 100 most significant innovations.

In 2016, Dr. Xie facilitated a technology licensing agreement that led to the establishment of Vionx Energy, which became the largest flow battery manufacturer in the United States.

Dr. Xie founded ZH Energy in 2021, with the mission of reducing the cost of flow battery systems through the development of high-performance, low-cost non-fluorinated ion-exchange membranes and iron-sulfur electrolyte technologies. His work aims to make long-duration energy storage more accessible and scalable for broad applications.

To date, Dr. Xie has authored 18 SCI-indexed international journal papers and holds over 20 granted U.S. patents and 7 Chinese patents.

With a proven track record as a Team Lead in the flow battery industry, he possesses deep hands-on experience in the design, manufacturing, and optimization of both battery stacks and complete systems, overseeing the full product lifecycle from R&D to production.
