【 Summary 】ZH Energy, in partnership with State Grid, has successfully commissioned the world’s first iron-sulfur flow battery demonstration project, which is now grid-connected and operating stably with globally leading performance. The company is currently preparing the country’s first megawatt-scale iron-sulfur flow battery demonstration system, scheduled to come online by the end of 2025.
14–15 July 2025, the “2025 TrendBank (Yinchuan) Long-Duration Energy Storage Industry Conference” was successfully held in Xingqing District, Yinchuan. Organised by the Xingqing District Government of Yinchuan, the Yinchuan Association for Science & Technology, and TrendBank, the event brought together research institutes, industry-chain companies, and more than 100 delegates to explore the future of energy storage.
Mr. Kang Zhiwei, General Manager of ZH Energy, was invited to deliver a keynote speech entitled “High-Safety, Low-Cost Iron-Sulphur Flow Battery”. In recognition of its technological innovation and industrialisation achievements in energy storage, Zhonghe Energy received the “2025 TrendBank Long-Duration Energy Storage Industry Product Excellence Award”.
Kang noted that low-cost energy storage is a prerequisite for reaching carbon-neutrality goals; the urgency of its development and the need for technological breakthroughs have become an industry consensus. Present electrochemical storage suffers from a clear dilemma: economical products lack safety, while safe products are uneconomical. To solve this, Zhonghe Energy pursues material-driven efficiency and cost reduction in three areas: increasing stack power density, developing high-performance and low-cost non-fluorinated ion-exchange membranes, and exploiting abundant, low-cost iron-sulphur electrolytes. The self-developed high-performance iron-sulphur flow battery integrates these advances—cutting electrolyte costs by 85 % compared with all-vanadium systems—to deliver an economical yet safe storage solution.
As the world’s first company to engineer iron-sulphur flow batteries, ZH Energy has, together with State Grid, put the globe’s first demonstration project into stable grid-connected operation. A nationwide first-of-its-kind megawatt-scale iron-sulphur flow battery demonstration is now under preparation and is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2025. Once scaled, the system’s initial installed cost is expected to fall below RMB 1/Wh, with a life-cycle LCOE as low as RMB 0.1/kWh—achieving break-even for generation-side storage and delivering clear economic advantages over lithium and vanadium batteries.
